The proliferation of electric bicycles

"The trolleys are hooked up to the electricity grid, making them vulnerable to outages, so electric bikes are an increasingly popular alternative when power doesn’t flow to the people. While that is well beyond the reach of the average North Korean, an expanding Empty hard gelatin capsule Factory gray market economy has given rise to a growing consumer class known as "donju", or "masters of money"."You can carry luggage," said Kim Chol Jin, a computer science student at Kim Chaek University of Technology, who was riding his electric bike along Mirae Scientists Street. On Saturday, a Reuters journalist covering the congress saw six of the bikes in the space of 10 minutes. While pedal-powered bikes still predominate on Pyongyang’s wide avenues, the electric bike trend began in 2015, locals and foreign residents of the North Korean capital said. Most residents still commute by foot or on the city’s crowded buses.

The proliferation of electric bicycles follows another recent local consumer trend: a surge in residential uغير مجاز مي باشدe of LED light bulbs and solar panels, to get around the country’s chronic electricity shortage.62 million won — around 0 at the unofficial exchange rate of 8,000 won to the dollar. Traffic is getting busier in Pyongyang, which in 2015 began laying out its first dedicated bicycle lanes.A bike made by a Chinese company called Anqi was for sale this week in Pyongyang’s Kwangbok Department Store for 2.

To ease congestion, authorities have even introduced a system to alternate the days vehicles are allowed on the once all-but empty roads."Lots of our e-bikes and e-motorcycles are exported to North Korea," she said.Traffic is still far from gridlock, but electric bikes have now joined the taxis, a growing fleet of private cars, and the Soviet-era trolleybuses that have plied the capital for decades.Almost unseen two years ago, the Chinese-made two-wheelers are a common site this week in the city, which hosts the first congress of the country’s ruling Workers’ Party in 36 years.Wheels have long been a sign of economic status for both individuals and nations, and on the lightly trafficked streets of Pyongyang, capital of impoverished and isolated North Korea, electric bicycles are the hottest new ride on the road.

The final death toll could surpass

8-magnitude quake adds to already heavy economic hardships being felt in this OPEC nation because of the collapse in world oil prices.People with more than million in assets will be charged a one-time tax of 0. The final death toll could surpass casualties from earthquakes in Chile and Peru in the past decade. In a televised address on Wednesday night, Correa warned the nation of a long and غير مجاز مي باشدtly post-quake recovery and said the economic pain shouldn’t fall only on hard-hit communities along the coast. "We have no water, no power and nothing to eat. "If we have even a hope of life, we must work with extreme care. We’ve lost everything.

Rescuers continued to comb through the rubble in coastal towns hit hardest by the quake but the clock was running down for finding survivors. Quito: The death count from Ecuador’s worst earthquake in a decade rose to at least 587 on Thursday even as the country faced another grim toll -- a long and غير مجاز مي باشدtly reconstruction effort likely to غير مجاز مي باشدt billions of dollars.Unlike the deadly earthquake that ravaged Chile in 2010, when commodity prices were at a high and most of South America was booming, Ecuador must rebuild with prices of oil, the lifeblood of its economy, near a decade low."Rescuers also found a more unusual survivor: A flapping white-and-brown duck was pulled from under a pile of rubble, becoming a social media celebrity in a country eager for good news. Officials listed 155 people as missing and the number of those made homeless climbed to over 23,500."

President Correa said that he would raise sales taxes and put a one-time levy on millionaires to help pay for reconstruction. Some wholesale empty gelatine capsule people waiting on Thursday in Manta had spent 10 hours in line the previous day only to come away empty handed. Soldiers keep control with fenced barricades. Rescue workers have said a person without serious injuries can survive up to a week buried in debris in the Ecuadorian heat.Taxes on companies will also go up and Correa said he will look to sell certain state assets that he didn’t specify.9% on their wealth, while workers earning over ,000 a month will be forced to contribute a day’s wages and those earning ,000 a month the equivalent of five days’ pay."I know we’re at the most-difficult stage right now but it’s just the beginning," he said.Using authority granted by the state of emergency he declared after Saturday night’s quake, Correa said sales taxes would increase from 12% to 14% for the coming year. A helicopter flyover of the damage zone on Wednesday showed entire city blocks in ruins as if they had been bombed. He is also drawing on 0 million in emergency credits from the World Bank and other multilateral lenders. While humanitarian aid has been pouring in from around the world, distribution is slow.Manufacturing is also suffering because the economy is dollarized, depriving companies in Ecuador of the same jolt the rest of South America has experienced from devalued currencies. On Thursday evening, the government raised the death toll to 587."I’ve lost my house and I’m living on the street. People have had to wait for hours under the tropical sun for aid packages that include water, cans of tuna and diapers."I still have hope we can find more people who are still alive beneath the rubble," he said.

Even before the quake, Ecuador was bracing for a bout of austerity, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasting the economy would shrink 4.The damage from the 7.5% this year. The tax hikes come as the scale of devastation continues to sink in.On Thursday, Jorge Zambrano, mayor of the community of Manta, announced that three people had been pulled from beneath a collapsed building the night before and vowed to continue searching.President Rafael Correa announced on Wednesday night that he would raise sales taxes and put a one-time levy on millionaires to help pay for reconstruction.

In addition to these large pieces

These haikus are autobiographical as they trace his journey and act as records of the most transforming moments.I have often remarked in jest that the number of Buddhas I have seen in various shapes, postures and sizes in India certainly outnumbers the Buddhas in the entire Buddhist belt! I wonder what is it that attracts artists into creating and entices audiences into dotting their living and work spaces with the Buddha icon Even those who shy away from keeping sculptures of other especially Hindu deities, are happy to plonk Buddhas everywhere from swimming pools to living rooms!

While I have nothing against the icon or his iconography, but the sheer number of boring times one comes across it, makes one want to yawn! Also because the interpretations and facial expressions are not rooted in the Indian historical references and are mostly derived empty vegetarian capsules from other far and south eastern cultures like Thai, Sinhalese, Japanese, Tibetan and really speaking don’t strike a chord. Bamboo shaped thicket with Tibetan calligraphy inscribed on it, complete with steel shining like water, copper pebbles with the name inscribed on it, as one walks through the work, one comes across almost as it by surprise, the Buddha deep in meditation shining like gold. For on the reverse, Buddha’s head is scooped out like a cave, its inner walls replete with rows of Buddhas almost as if like a rock edict. The philosophy behind it is charming as it is beautiful – of the many Buddha’s that live in the Godhead, the nishkam karm yoga, the sthitapragya, the sleep as a meditative element all this and more. His present work The Buddhas Within that is easily the obvious piece de resistance of the show is a breathtakingly large sleeping Buddha’s head (23x13. After all I too am guilty of bringing a finely decorated wooden Buddha form Thailand tucked into my hand luggage once, so why laugh at others !Given this mindset, I went to see artist Satish Gupta’s show Zen Space with least expectations and returned impressed with his highly fine tuned aesthetics and the sense of peace he is able to convey through his Buddhas. His subtle colour palette, his sense of fine layers that beckon the onlooker into their folds and in the last few exhibitions, the spectrum of Buddha iconography or rather the breadth of vision that Satish brings to his work is rather admirable. However, given my propensity to shy away from the obvious — not to be difficult, I assure you, but that is simply me — the work that appealed to me the most in the show was the Zen Forest. Set amidst these rows sprawls the figure of a gilded sleeping Buddha. He takes it many steps forward in this show.

In addition to these large pieces, Satish is showing a collection of haikus, presented in his characteristic and visually rich calligraphic style like on some really gorgeous works on paper. Then there are the profoundly moving sculptures Shunya and Meditations on a Mandala, each a masterpiece of voids and solids, a Buddha cut from a metal sheet of Buddhas and suspended from a metal rope, to merge one moment and emerge the next, a point of mediation and meditation. In another work, Surrender, a gracefully aerodynamic Garuda measuring 12 x 16 x 9 feet to understand the sheer magnitude of his perspective, is poised almost to take off.5x9 feet) reclined at an angle that has a surprise element. "You are welcome to your mansions and palaces, "The empty sky belongs to me" and "Each person’s silence is unique, just like his voice", captures the subtle nuances of the Zen philosophy that the artist practices. The sense of calm that is Satish’s hallmark and how he is able to create an expanse from the smallest, like a world from an atom is so incredible that it takes your breath away by the thought. Save for his Rajasthan series, which I found aesthetically far too aggressive for my liking, I have always liked his work. Again the allegory is obvious but the musicality of the piece was so extraordinary that I left my heart in the thicket. And yet, the size of the works remains at the human scale in the sense that their attempt is not to dwarf you but to elevate you on the wings of the Zen space.

For once the Buddhas didn’t make me baulk – and none is more delighted than yours truly! Dr Alka Raghuvanshi is an art writer, curator and artist and can be contacted on alkaraghuvanshi@yahoo. But then Satish is master at creating these delicate flower like works that are fragrant and yet replete with meaning.com. Despite its size, this sculpture exhibits a suggestion of lightness, the possibility of flight that is more real than imagined.
